The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched probe into alleged corruption of three individuals, including former Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina's assistant private secretary (APS) Gazi Hafizur Rahman Liku.
The two other individuals are former Member of Parliament (MP) Mustafizur Rahaman Chowdhury and Vice Chancellor (VC) of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) Mymensingh Prof. Dr. Soumitra Shekhar Dey.
The ACC took the decision to launch probe against them following the initial investigation that had unearthed their unethical practices by using respective positions, ACC Deputy Director Md. Aktarul Islam said.
According to the primary investigation, former PM's APS Liku, who hails from Gopalganj, amassed substantial wealth through abuse of power, irregularities and corruption.
He accrued several hundred bighas of lands, plots, flats, residential buildings in Gopalganj, Dhaka and several other parts of the country under his wife and other family members' names.
On the other hand, property as well as annual income of Mustafizur Rahaman Chowdhury, who became MP twice, grew exponentially from Tk 15,000 only in 2014 to Tk 3.2 million in 2024, according to the ACC documents.
He also had a couple of luxury cars, a number of flats and plots registered with his name in different parts of Dhaka, while his wife had a five-storey house and a flat in Kafrul area.
Besides, he and his family members accumulated substantial wealth in the name of recruitment trade.
Meanwhile, Soumitra Shekhar Dey allegedly gathered huge assets through malpractices and irregularities after he was appointed the JKKNIU VC.
Allegations against him included getting a number of students admitted to the university through nepotism and irregularities, recruiting teachers and other staff members bypassing the standard, and embezzling public money showing vehicle fuel cost.
He also took commission of Tk 50,000 against per Tk 10 million through transfer of fund from Sonali Bank to Rupali Bank that was deposited by the contractors.
The academician also owned duplex house and lands in Sherpur, and a number of flats in Dhaka's Dhanmondi and Uttara areas.
