ACC sues BCIC engineer, SL leader over graft

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case on Wednesday in Bogura against two persons including a Sramik League (SL) leader for their connection in misappropriating government fertiliser worth Tk 1.53 billion.

The accused are - Nabir Uddin Khan, a former Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) engineer, who was in-charge of buffer stock warehouse located in Santahar of Adamdighi Upazila in Bogura.

Rashedul Islam Raja, proprietor of Messrs Raja Enterprise, who is also the convener of Adamdighi Upazila Sramik League.

The ACC's assistant director Aminul Islam filed the case with Adamdighi police station on the day as per the section 5(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947 and sections 409/420/109 of the penal code.

According to the case statement, the two persons, in collusion with the people engaged in transporting fertilisers, misappropriated 52,343 tonnes of fertiliser worth Tk 1,533,613,752.

The aforementioned people, abusing their power, documented 189,906 tonnes of fertiliser in the Santahar buffer stock warehouse instead of original 242,249 tonnes to misappropriate the rest.
