ACC to sue 11 persons over Tk 5.25b embezzlement

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to file six cases against 11 individuals of six recruiting agencies on charges of embezzling and laundering Tk 5.25 billion.

ACC Director General (Prevention) Md Akhter Hossain said on Thursday the accused had taken five times more money than the government-approved fees from 31,331 migrants who went to Malaysia.

The accused are Amin Tours and Travels owner Ruhul Amin, accused of taking an additional Tk 1.24 billion from 7,430 workers; Chairman of Merit Trade International Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron and his wife (who is managing director of the company), accused of taking Tk 584 million extra from 3,489 workers; Sadia International owner Shamim Ahmed Chowdhury Noman, accused of taking Tk 556.2 million extra from 3,321 workers; Imperial Resource Chairman Md Iqbal Hossain and Managing Director Badrudozza Chowdhury, accused of taking Tk 1.35 billion extra from 8,101 workers; RRC Human Resort Service Chairman Mohammad Moniruzzaman and Managing Director Md Alomgir Kabir, accused of taking Tk 871.3 million extra from 5,202 workers; and Thanex International's former managing director Abdullah Shahid, Director Md Joynal Abedin Nomani, and present Managing Director Shamsher Ahmed, accused of taking Tk 638.9 million extra from 3,788 workers.

The cases against them were approved on Tuesday.

Previously, on March 11, the ACC filed cases against 32 people over the embezzlement of Tk 11.28 billion.

Besides, on September 14, it sued 13 recruiting agency officials for misappropriating Tk 11.59 billion.

Due to widespread irregularities and syndicate control, Malaysia stopped recruiting Bangladeshi workers in 2018.

The Southeast Asian country resumed hiring from Bangladesh after signing a new labour deal on December 19, 2021.

The government fixed a maximum migration cost of Tk 78,540 per worker, as per a 2022 directive from the expatriates' welfare ministry.
