ILLEGAL ASSETS, SUSPICIOUS TRANSACTIONS

ACC to sue ex-MP Mukul, wife, C&F agent Shamsur

FE REPORT | October 01, 2025 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved cases against former Awami League lawmaker Ali Azam Mukul, his wife Jahanara Yasmin, and Customs Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) Agent Md Shamsur Rahman over illegal wealth, suspicious transactions, and false declarations.

ACC Director General Akhter Hossain confirmed the approvals on Tuesday at the commission's headquarters in Dhaka.

According to the ACC, former Bhola-2 MP Ali Azam Mukul amassed assets worth Tk 29.2 million beyond known income sources. He carried out transactions amounting to Tk 537 million through 37 accounts in five banks, including deposits of Tk 27.6 million and withdrawals of Tk 26.1 million.

His wife Jahanara allegedly owns Tk 671 million in illegal assets. Investigators found she deposited Tk 336 million and withdrew Tk 325 million from 39 bank accounts, with suspicious transactions totalling Tk 661 million.

Meanwhile, C&F Agent Md Shamsur Rahman faces charges for illegal assets worth Tk 530 million. Although he declared Tk 312.8 million in his wealth statement, ACC found his actual wealth amounted to Tk 648 million.

He also spent Tk 293 million on family and other expenses, raising his total net wealth to Tk 941.3 million. Only Tk 413.9 million of this amount could be explained by legal income, leaving Tk 527.4 million without valid sources. The ACC further said Shamsur concealed assets worth Tk 335.2 million in his statement.

Cases against Mr Mukul and his wife will be filed under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act, 2004; Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947; and Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. Shamsur Rahman will face charges under Sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the ACC Act, 2004.

Earlier, on April 8 this year, a court barred Mukul, Jahanara, their daughter Amena Azam Orshi, and son Raihan Abid Amir from travelling abroad.
