‘Accidents claim 223 lives during Eid vacation’

FE Report | August 20, 2019 00:00:00

A total of 223 people were killed and 670 others injured in road, rail and waterway accidents across the country during the Eid vacation from August 06-17.

Some 176 accidents took place in the country during the period, said a report released by the Road Safety Foundation on Monday.

The report was prepared based on information collected from newspapers, news portals and television channels, said a press release issued by the foundation.

At least 197 people were killed and 627 others injured in 146 road accidents. Besides, 19 people were killed in 21 incidents on waterways while seven were killed in nine rail accidents.

The report also said the number of accidents was higher on local roads than that of highways. Some 65 accidents took place on highways and 81 on local roads.

Unfit vehicles and unskilled drivers, driving without rest, and lack of awareness were behind such road accidents, it added.

The foundation, however, suggested devising sustainable strategy and creating a sufficient number of skilled workers to prevent such accidents.

It also recommended decentralising the administration and introducing a people-friendly transport system.
