FE Report | July 07, 2014 00:00:00

Bangladesh Railway (BR) will start selling advance tickets from July 20 for different routes to facilitate journey of homebound people during the Eid-ul-Fitr festival.

Tickets of all classes of inter-city trains will be sold in advance and will continue till July 28, said Railway Minister Mujibul Haque while addressing a press briefing at Rail Bhaban Sunday.

According to the schedule, advance tickets for July 24 will be sold on July 20, while tickets for July 25 on July 21, July 26 tickets on July 22, July 27 tickets on July 23, and July 28 tickets on July 24. Return tickets for the capital will be on sale from July 27 to July 31.

Special security measures will be taken at Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and other railway stations to help passengers collect tickets unhindered. But no one will be allowed to buy more than four tickets.

Although there will be no mention of passenger's name, the ticket will bear the gender identity of the passenger for the first time along with his/her age.

"We can't mention the passenger's name this time, but we will introduce the name within the next two months as soon as the present stocks are finished," said the minister.

An additional 166 coaches will be added to the inter-city trains, which will run even on the days of weekly interval during the Eid festival. A good number of engines, damaged during the last year's political violence, will also be added to the exiting locomotive pool after necessary repairs.

"A total of 205 locomotives will be running to carry passengers during the Eid festival," said the minister.

The Railway will also introduce special train services before the festival to carry the huge number of homebound passengers.

The minister, however, could not mention the number of trains and their routes as well as timing of the special services.

"The Railway will take all necessary measures to reduce sufferings of the homebound passengers that they face during every Eid season," he added.

To monitor the overall situation, a central control room will be opened at the Kamalapur railway station, and four divisional control rooms will also be opened to monitor ticket sales as well as law and order situation.

The briefing was addressed, among others, by Railway Secretary Abul Kalam Azad and director general of Bangladesh Railway Tofazzal Hosain.
