Education Adviser Prof Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar said that advanced technologies are creating new opportunities for students across the country.
He also warned that issues such as intolerance, ultranationalism and blinkered attitudes pose a challenge to the country's greater achievements, urging the young generation to fight these menace with a view to making the world full of justice, peace and tolerance.
He was speaking as the representative of the president at the 24th convocation of East West University (EWU) held amid festivities at the Aftabnagar Sports Ground outside of the main campus in the city on Wednesday. The roads from the main campus to the convocation ground were decked out in colourful flags.
At the event, Mr Abrar conferred degrees on 2,885 students of undergraduate and graduate programmes. Moreover, six students with exceptional talent were honoured with gold medals.
Managing Director of Apex Footwear Limited, Bangladesh Syed Nasim Manzur, who was present as the convocation speaker, said that the future of Bangladesh in the next 25-30 years depends on educated and skilled young people, urging the new graduates to be prepared for entrepreneurship instead of looking for jobs.
He advised them to get ideas about different stages of businesses before starting it. Otherwise, it might incur loss, he added.
Considering China to be a role model, he opined that along with starting big companies, it is also possible for everyone to contribute to the GDP growth by initiating small companies.
UGC Chairman Prof S. M. A. Faiz, who attended the event as the special guest, mentioned that the UGC has changed its approach and attitude to ensure a better environment for education in Bangladesh. He advised the graduates to take proper care of their families.
Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and founder Vice-Chancellor of EWU Prof Mohammed Farashuddin demanded a standard Education Commission in Bangladesh along with an up-to-date and innovative education policy. He called upon the new graduates to be more careful about utilizing the wealth and opportunities available in the country.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Shams Rahman laid emphasis on technological and communication skills to keep pace with the present world. He encouraged the graduates to go beyond their conventional structure and create something new using their innovative power.
National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman, also the chief adviser's high representative, vice-chancellors of different universities, cultural personalities, distinguished members of the board of trustees, pro-vice chancellor, treasurer, registrar, deans, chairpersons, faculty members, staff, graduates, and their parents were present at the programme.
