JULY UPRISING

Australia, Canada express solidarity

August 06, 2025 00:00:00

The Australian High Commission and the Canadian High Commission on Tuesday acknowledged the significance of August 5, marking the anniversary of the student-led mass movement in Bangladesh, and reaffirmed its support for the country's democratic transition. "We remember those who died or were injured during last year's civil unrest," the Australian High Commission said in a statement posted on its official Facebook page, reports BSS.

The mission further noted, "We support Bangladesh as it moves towards free, fair and participatory elections."

The message comes as several diplomatic missions in Dhaka, including those of the UK, EU, Germany, France, and Canada, issued statements on the anniversary, recalling the events of July-August 2024 that led to the formation of the current interim government.

In a message posted on its official Facebook page, the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka stated, "Canada joins the people of Bangladesh in marking this important day to recognize their courage and democratic aspirations."
