CHATTOGRAM, July 01: Asian University for Women (AUW), based in Chattogram, has offered hundreds of new scholarships to Afghan female students who are eligible and qualified for admission to its undergraduate or graduate programmes.

During his four-day visit to Kabul, Kamal Ahmad, founder of Asian University for Women, met Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, Acting Deputy Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, and made the offer.

He also handed over essential medicines to him as gift. Earlier, the Afghan authorities made a request for medicines for the hospitals in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

Deputy Foreign Minister Stanikzai welcomed the AUW's initiative and committed his support for the proposal.

Kamal Ahmad also held talks with the acting minister for higher education, the minister for education, the chancellor of Kabul University and other senior government officials. He called on the Ambassador of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) based in Kabul.

In addition to the scholarships, AUW has proposed launching an online pilot secondary school education programme under which Afghan students are now studying at AUW Graduate School of Education. It would run online classes as per the Afghan national curriculum.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) is being prepared in this regard. AUW would enter into the deal with the Afghan Ministry of Education.

This pilot project would provide an opportunity for Afghan master's degree students. It would also help young girls continue their study at home.
