FE REPORT | October 14, 2023 00:00:00

Bangladesh is going to observe the World Standards Day 2023 today (Saturday) aiming to promote sustainable global standard.

The day, observed on October 14 every year, serves as a global reminder of the importance of maintaining high standards for products and services.

This year, the 54th World Standards Day, revolves around the theme of 'Shared Vision for a Better World- Standards for Sustainable Development Goals'.

Bangladesh, like the rest of the world, joins the celebration, highlighting the significance of this day.

In honour of World Standards Day, President Mohammed Sahabuddin, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumdar and Industries Senior Secretary Zakia Sultana have issued separate messages.

The messages underline the country's commitment to upholding and improving product and service quality to contribute to global standards and sustainable development.

International support for World Standards Day is evident with the messages from prominent organisations such as the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Their involvement highlights the global importance of maintaining high standards and fostering collaboration in achieving sustainable development.

The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has organised various programmes to mark the occasion.

The programmes include awareness campaigns, discussions, and meetings to be held at BSTI's head office, divisional offices, and district offices throughout the country on Saturday.

BSTI has undertaken a multifaceted approach to raise awareness about standards.

Special interview-based discussion programmes will be broadcast on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar, reaching a wide audience.

Moreover, Short Message Service (SMS) has been introduced to disseminate information to mobile phone users, said BSTI release.

Banners, festoons, and placards have been displayed at strategic locations in the capital city to create a visual reminder of the day's significance.

To further emphasise the importance of adhering to global standards, a discussion meeting is also scheduled for the morning of October 19 at the BSTI head office in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

BSTI Director General (Grade-1) Md Abdus Sattar said World Standards Day is an occasion celebrated across the world to promote the quality of products and services.

Bangladesh, through the active participation of key dignitaries, institutions, and organisations, is making significant strides in fostering global standards and contributing to sustainable development, he added.

The commitment to high standards is essential in today's interconnected world, and Bangladesh is playing its part in this global endeavour, he observed.
