BD youth killed by Khasia smugglers near Sylhet border

SYLHET, Mar 07 (UNB): A Bangladeshi youth was killed in an attack by Khasia smugglers near the Indian border in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet.

The victim, identified as Shahed Mia (25), son of Mosahid Mia from Mangalpur village in Kanaighat upazila, said a BGB press release issued on Friday.

According to locals, Shahed was reportedly involved in smuggling.

Commanding officer of BGB's 48th Battalion Lt Col Md Nazmul Haque said that a Bangladeshi youth was killed by Indian smugglers (Khasia). After learning about the incident from local sources, BGB informed the Indian Border Security Force (BSF), who later provided a photograph of the deceased.

"Shahed's family and local representatives identified him from the photo," he said.

According to BGB, Shahed crossed the border into India around 3am on Thursday and got into a conflict with local Khasia smugglers. During the altercation, he was attacked and killed.

The process of repatriating his body is underway and legal procedures are being followed to bring the body back to Bangladesh, the BGB official added.
