BRACU celebrates Int'l Day of Midwife

BRAC University (BRACU) marked the International Day of the Midwife 2026 on Tuesday (May 5) with a series of events to strengthen awareness and understanding of the vital role of midwives in advancing quality, respectful, and equitable maternity care, according to a press release.

The events were organised by the Midwifery Education Programme (MEP) of the BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health under the global theme "One Million More Midwives", highlighting the estimated workforce required worldwide to meet essential healthcare needs.

The day began with a vibrant procession crossing through Mohammadpur and Shyamoli areas, followed by a cultural programme at the MEP's academic site in Adabor area. The programme featured performances, including a drama, to showcase the importance of midwifery in maternal and newborn health.

As part of the observance, an awareness session was held at T&T Adarsha Mohila College in Mohakhali area on May 4, aiming to promote health consciousness among students. The session focused on maternal health, newborn care, and preventive healthcare practices.

A capping ceremony was also organised for students of the MEP's 12th batch, focusing on their readiness to undertake clinical responsibilities and marking an important milestone in their professional journey.

Addressing the event, MEP director Dr. Sharmina Rahman emphasised the significance of midwifery profession, noting both its challenges and future potential.
