BUET students block Shahbag with three demands

DU CORRESPONDENT | August 27, 2025 00:00:00

The students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) blocked Shahbag with three-point demands at around 3:00 pm on Tuesday. As a result, traffic movement on the roads around the capital's busy crossing came to a halt.

Their demands included - everyone must pass the recruitment examination and must have at least a BSc degree for entry into the 9th grade engineering or assistant engineer or equivalent positions; and no promotion would be given through quota, and even by creating equivalent posts under different names.

The BUET students also demanded recruitment examination for the 10th grade technical or sub-assistant engineer or equivalent positions, which must be made open for both the diploma and BSc degree-holders.

They also sought proper legal action against those using the designation 'engineer' without having a BSc degree in engineering.

Nishad Rahman, a 21st batch student of BUET's Department of Civil Engineering, said, "This is our long-standing movement. But the government is not paying any attention to our demands. Therefore, we have been compelled to take to the streets."
