Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) on Monday unveiled a memorial at the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall area honouring Abrar Fahad, the BUET student who was tortured to death in 2019 by currently banned Chhatra League.

The monument, titled "Abrar Fahad Smritifalak," was inaugurated at 3 PM by BUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman at a ceremony organised by the Sher-e-Bangla Hall Alumni Association, according to a press statement.

The memorial was built to commemorate Abrar Fahad's courage, commitment to justice, and ideals, with the hope that it will inspire future generations on the path of truth and justice.

The event was attended by noted cultural personality and BUET alumnus Engineer Abul Hayat, the association's General Secretary Professor Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Sher-e-Bangla Hall Provost Professor Dr Md Ashiqur Rahman and the association's President Engineer Rezaul Karim, who presided over the function.

Speaking at the ceremony, the vice-chancellor paid deep respects and sympathies to Abrar's family and stressed the need for collective efforts to prevent such tragedies.

Meanwhile, another memorial, titled 'Eight Pillars Against Aggression' - rebuilt to honour the legacy of BUET student Abrar Fahad -- was inaugurated on Monday at the Palashi intersection, six years after it was demolished by fascist forces, reports BSS.

The memorial also commemorates the martyrs of the July uprising, symbolising the nation's continued struggle against domination, aggression and injustice.

Marking Abrar's sixth martyrdom anniversary, the memorial was inaugurated this afternoon by his father, Barkat Ullah, at a programme organised by the Abrar Fahad Smriti Sangsad.

Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam, and Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministries of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and Youth and Sports were present.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossain, Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) Vice President Md Abu Sadik Kayeem, and Abrar's younger brother Abrar Faiyaj also joined the discussion and inauguration ceremony.
