CEPZ factory fire under control

Two probe bodies formed

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 17: The devastating fire that broke out at the Adams Caps and Textile Limited in Zone 5 of the Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) was brought under control after 17 hours.

Jasim Uddin, Deputy Assistant Director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence at the Agrabad office in the port city said that a total of 25 firefighting units from several stations managed to bring the blaze under control around 7:15 am on Friday. However, the burnt factory-building was declared risky.

Duty Officer of CEPZ Fire Service Md Zakir said that the blaze was brought partially under control but it was not yet fully extinguished.

According to the officials of Fire Service and Civil Defence, two separate committees were formed to investigate the incident. One was formed by the Fire Service and another by the CEPZ authority. The five-member Fire Service panel has been asked to submit its report within 15 days, while the CEPZ committee comprising five members will submit its findings within five days.

Sources said the fire started around 2:20pm on Thursday. Upon receiving information, 17 units from the Agrabad and Port Fire Service stations along with the Bangladesh Navy, rushed to the scene and began efforts to bring the blaze under control. Besides, Bangladesh Air Force and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) also joined the fight against the CEPZ fire.

However, the fire spread rapidly and became intense before firefighters could manage to contain it. But before that the fire engulfed the entire building at around 10.30 pm on Thursday causing a total damage to the building. The origin of the fire, the extent of loss and damage could not be determined yet. There was no casualty reported.
