Christiansen confirmed as US envoy to BD

FE REPORT | December 20, 2025 00:00:00

Brent Christiansen has been confirmed as the next US Ambassador to Bangladesh at a time of political transitions and heightened regional sensitivity in the South Asian nation.

Sources say the US Senate, the upper house of the American parliament, Congress, has consented to his current diplomatic assignment to Bangladesh. Christiansen, a career diplomat with decades of experience across Asia and Europe, is expected to arrive in Dhaka in the coming weeks. His appointment comes as Bangladesh prepares for elections under an interim administration and seeks to recalibrate relations with international partners amid concerns over democratic governance, human rights and economic stability.

In his confirmation hearing, Christiansen emphasised the strategic importance of Bangladesh, describing it as a "pivotal partner" in the Indo-Pacific region.

He has pledged to support democratic institutions, strengthen economic ties and deepen cooperation on climate resilience, labour rights and regional security.

Bangladesh is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, and US officials have signalled that climate diplomacy would be a "central pillar" of the new ambassador's mandate.

Christiansen brings extensive experience in Asian affairs. He previously served in senior diplomatic roles in Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia and at the US mission to the European Union. Colleagues describe him as a "cautious but effective negotiator, with a strong grasp of trade, development assistance and security cooperation".

With more than 170 million people, Bangladesh remains a critical partner for the US - a reality that will shape Christiansen's tenure from the outset.
