City fires severely burn couple, two plumbers

A married couple and two plumbers sustained severe burn injuries in two separate incidents of fire in the capital on Tuesday.

The couple- Saiful Islam (26) and his wife Sajena Akhter, 18- who met an accident when a gas cylinder exploded in Mohammadpur area in the morning were admitted to the burn and plastic surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Quoting doctors, DMCH police outpost's Sub-inspector Bachchu Miah said the victims were in critical condition.

The police sources said the two plumbers identified as Md Shohel, 22, and Reaz Hawladar, 25, received severe burns as fire ensued when they were repairing leakage of a gas pipeline on the 7th floor of Yunus Tower in the city's Kadamtali area around 11:30am.

The victims with 25 to 40 per cent burns in their bodies were taken to the DMCH burn unit.

Sensing gas smell, the duo tried to confirm the presence of gas by lighting a lighter and then there was a loud sound followed by an ignition of fire in which both got burnt severely, said SI Bachchu Miah.

Bachchu Miah, quoting physicians, told the FE that the victims were out of danger.
