Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman passed away on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital. He was 58, report agencies.
The senior government official died at 6:25 am following complications that developed during his hospitalization.
Mahbubur Rahman was admitted to Square Hospital on April 13 after experiencing a decline in his health and a low platelet count, where he was eventually diagnosed with Malaria.
He was an official of the 13th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Customs and Excise cadre. Throughout a career spanning several decades, he held various important positions within the government bureaucracy.
He assumed his most recent posting as Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce on February 25, 2025, a position in which he served until his death.
Mahbubur Rahman is survived by his wife and three daughters. His passing is deeply mourned by his family, as well as a vast circle of colleagues and well-wishers who remember him for his professional dedication.
Later, namaz-e-janaza for Mahbubur Rahman was held after Jummah prayers at the Secretary Apartment Complex in the capital's Eskaton area. According to family sources, he would be laid to rest in Gachha area of Gazipur.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari, Cabinet Secretary Dr Nasimul Ghani, and Senior Secretary of Land Ministry ASM Saleh Ahmed, among others, attended the janaza. Special prayers were offered seeking eternal peace for the departed soul.
Meanwhile, the commerce minister expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Mahbubur Rahman. In a condolence message, the minister paid rich tribute to the deceased, describing him as a skilled, honest and dedicated official.
Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said he had the opportunity to work with Mahbubur Rahman for about two months and found him to be a sincere and efficient officer devoted to his duties and the country. The minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
Bangladesh China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCCI) also expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Mahbubur Rahman. In a condolence message, BCCCI President Mohd. Khorshed Alam paid rich tribute to the deceased, saying that the business community has lost a wise, competent, and compassionate guardian whose guidance and integrity would be deeply missed.
