Commercial courts a pressing need to enhance trade, business

Says DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed

FE REPORT | December 27, 2025 00:00:00

President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) Taskeen Ahmed has praised the Chief Justice's initiative to establish dedicated commercial courts across the country, calling it a timely and pressing need to enhance competitive trade and business development.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed on December 24, according to a press release issued on Friday.

The DCCI president further said that although the country has institutions such as the Artha Rin Adalat and the Arbitration Act, 2001, their narrow jurisdiction and weak integration into the broader dispute resolution framework have constrained the development of an effective business-related dispute settlement culture in the economy.

In this context, he described the recent approval of the Commercial Court Ordinance 2025 as a timely and game-changing step.

Efficient commercial dispute resolution, he added, is one of the key priorities for ensuring a pro-business climate in an increasingly competitive global economy.

Taskeen Ahmed also acknowledged several other initiatives undertaken by the Chief Justice, including the historic move to establish a Supreme Court Secretariat, the digitisation of day-to-day court operations, and the formation of the Supreme Judicial Appointment Council.

He said these measures would help strengthen judicial independence and enhance the confidence of the private sector and other stakeholders in the country's judicial ecosystem.

Responding to the DCCI president's remarks, Chief Justice of Bangladesh Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed said the private sector should continue its concerted efforts to turn the Commercial Court Ordinance into a full-fledged Act and ensure its effective implementation, so that it can further facilitate trade and investment growth, also read the press release.

DCCI's Senior Vice President Razeev H Chowdhury, Vice President Md Salem Sulaiman and Secretary General (Acting) Dr AKM Asaduzzaman Patwary were also present at the meeting.
