Police on Sunday foiled a demonstration of job seekers who gathered at the city's Shahbagh intersection to press for increasing the age limit for recruitment in public service to 35 years.

Policed also detained at least four demonstrators from the spot, eyewitnesses said.

A group of students and job seekers under the banner of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Parishad put up barricade at Shahbagh intersection at 12.30 pm on Saturday and continued the protest for the second consecutive day.

The job seekers continued their agitation until police dispersed them around 10:45am.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Ramna police station HM Azimul Huq said the job seekers continued their blockade programme on Sunday morning despite a request from police to call off it.

He also said police will interrogate the four detained leaders of the platform to know about its activities.

Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Parishad convener Sanjoy Das claimed that five of their activists have been detained by the police.

He also vowed to continue their movement until their demands were met and said their next course of actions would be announced soon.

Currently, the age limit for entering public service is 30 years while retirement age is 59 years.
