Cops foil job seekers' rally, detain seven

November 04, 2018 00:00:00

Police on Saturday foiled a pre-scheduled rally of the job seekers at Shahbagh intersection demanding an extension of the age limit to 35 from 30 for entering government jobs, reports UNB.

Under the Banner of 'Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Parishad', several hundred job seekers and students from different colleges and universities tried to bring out a procession from the public library and take position at Shabagh intersection.

While they were marching forward, police charged batons on the demonstrators that left eight injured.

The law enforcers also detained seven activists of the platform from the procession.

The convener of the platform Sanjoy Das, said, "Police attacked us without any reason while we were trying to bring out a procession. The law enforcement members obstructed us by locking the main gate of the public library."

"We sought permission to hold our scheduled rally at TSC in Dhaka University instead of Shahbagh, but police did not allow us," he added.

Sanjoy, however, claimed that police detained at least 10 members of the platform from the spot.

Azimul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said, "We told the demonstrators not to wage any movement in the area on security ground as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to attend a programme at Suhrawardy Udyan on Sunday."

We detained seven of them to interrogate as some of them tried to make chaos, he added.
