A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered the seizure of immovable properties worth Tk 220 million (220 crore) owned by former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah and his family members.

The properties include lands and plots located in Faridpur, Narayanganj and Dhaka, registered under 36 separate deeds, reports BSS.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order, allowing two separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to the petition, an investigation team has been formed to probe allegations that Asaduzzaman Miah, his family members and other relatives acquired assets beyond known sources of income through various irregularities and corrupt practices. Reliable sources indicated that the persons concerned were attempting to transfer, relocate or dispose of illegally acquired assets.

For the sake of a fair investigation, the petition said, it is necessary to immediately seize the immovable properties belonging to Asaduzzaman Miah, his family members and persons with vested interests.

Meanwhile, the ACC also sought a travel ban, stating that credible information suggests the accused persons are trying to flee the country after illegally transferring movable and immovable assets.

If they leave Bangladesh, there is a strong possibility that crucial documents related to corruption allegations and asset details may be destroyed or concealed, the petition said.
