Court orders seizure of tax docs of Benazir's wife, daughter, DB Harun

FE REPORT | January 09, 2025 00:00:00

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to seize the income tax documents of Harun Or Rashid, former head of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and his brother ABM Shahriar in two corruption cases.

It also ordered the commission to seize the income tax documents of former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed's wife Jissan Mirza and his younger daughter Tahseen Raisa Binte Benazir on charges of amassing wealth illegally.

Judge of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court Md Zakir Hossain passed the order after hearing four petitions filed by the ACC seeking the seizure of the documents.

Earlier in the day, ACC Deputy Director Mohammad Joynal Abedin, who is conducting the investigations, placed the petitions before the court.

ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir, who moved the petitions on behalf of the anti-graft body, confirmed the court order to The Financial Express.

In the petitions, ACC officials said former DB chief Harun had amassed wealth of Tk 175.11 million by abusing his official power. So, it is necessary to seize and review all his income tax returns and the related documents for the sake of a fair investigation.

Besides, his brother Shahriar acquired wealth of Tk 129.68 million beyond the known sources of income. So, it is also necessary to seize Shahriar's income tax returns for a proper investigation, the officials further said.

On December 17 last year, the commission filed three graft cases against Harun, his wife Shirin Akhter, and his brother Shahriar for their alleged involvement in amassing wealth illegally.

Earlier on October 24, the ACC summoned Harun over allegations of acquiring assets worth millions beyond his known sources of income through irregularities and corruption.

But he skipped court appearance as he had gone into hiding after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.

The court on August 27 issued a travel ban on Harun and his wife in connection with the investigation into a corruption case against them.

According to the court documents, Harun's wife Jissan amassed wealth of Tk 316.95 million beyond her known sources of income. She also concealed information about wealth of Tk 160.01 million.

On the other hand, Benazir assisted his wife in acquiring illegal wealth. His younger daughter Tahseen Raisa gained wealth of Tk 55.95 million beyond her known sources of income.

On December 15 last year, the ACC filed four cases against Benazir, his wife, and two daughters on charges of amassing wealth illegally.
