President Abdul Hamid urged journalists on Wednesday to criticise the government in a constructive way based on accurate information so that it can identify its lapses and lacking, reports UNB.

He made the call while handing over 'Bazlur Rahman Memorial Medal 2017' to journalists at Liberation War Museum in the city for their contributions to journalism related to Liberation War.

"Media and democracy are complementary to each other. Media highlight the opinions and hopes of the people by making constructive criticism to the lapses and lacking of the government.

Currently, the responsibility of newspapers and electronic media is very significant as they're fully enjoying and exercising their right to expression," President Hamid said.

He went on saying, "Responsible journalism can help a journalist reach the peak of professional excellence. You can criticise the government and even me.

It, however, should be kept in mind that it must be based on the proper information so that the criticism can't be one-sided one."

Mr Hamid said constructive criticism can play an important role in making the right decision.

"Everyone expects the media to give the highest priority to the national interest with responsibility in presenting news and opinions," he added.

Mentioning his personal intimacy with Bazlur Rahma in the 1970s, he said, "Bazlu Bhai used to write what he believed and did never compromise.

"Introducing awards after the name of Bazlu Bhai for journalism on Liberation War affairs is an excellent effort to show respect to his memory.

The initiative will play a significant role in presenting history of the struggle for Independence and Liberation War to the new generation," he added.

Bazlur Rahman, a journalist and husband of Agriculture Minister and Awami League presidium member Matia Chowdhury, had worked for the daily Sangbad until the last day of his life.

The Bazlur Rahman Memorial Medal 2017' went to Rita Bhoumick of Daily Jugantor under print media category while it went to Soma Islam of Channel I under electronic media category.
