CHATTOGRAM, Nov 18: Chattogram University (CU), one of the most important public universities in the country, celebrated its 56th founding anniversary on Friday.

The authorities brought out a procession led by CU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shirin Akter marking the University Day while Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud was also present.

Addressing a discussion on this occasion, Dr Hasan Mahmud, also an alumnus of CU, said BNP will have to pay a heavy price if they create anarchy in the name of public meeting.

The vice chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Benu Kumar Dey, CU Alumni Association President Abdul Karim and General Secretary Mahbubul Alam were also present at the discussion.

The VC said the authorities had the sincere efforts that the CU could grab the top position on the list of the country's universities.

"CU students and teachers contributed a lot for the country. They fought against the Pakistan Army during the Liberation War and played key roles in all democratic and progressive movements of our nation," he added.

The university started its academic activities on November 18, 1966 with Master of Arts programmes for 200 students in the departments of Bengali, English, history, and economics.

The departments of medicine, engineering, law and education were later incorporated as separate departments in colleges outside the university.
