CHATTOGRAM, Oct 08: A court here has put a Chittagong University (CU) teacher on a three-day remand for interrogation in a case filed under the ICT Act for making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Judge Shahidullah Kaiser of the Court of Senior Judicial Magistrate, Chattogram issued the order after hearing a petition.

The investigation officer of the case filed the petition seeking five days' remand for the accused teacher Maidul Islam.

Maidul Islam, assistant professor of the Sociology department of CU, appeared before the court and sought extension of bail granted by the High Court (HC).

Earlier, the HC granted him bail in the case for eight weeks that expired on September 24.

Lawyer of the accused Bhulan Lal Bhoumik prayed for extension of bail but the court rejected it and sent Maidul Islam to jail giving him three days' remand.

Bhulan said they had appealed to the HC to extend bail but the top court also rejected it.

On July 23, Maidul posted disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in his Facebook account during student agitation for reform in quota system of the government jobs.

He also made unbecoming remarks about the quota for freedom fighters' children in the government service.

Bijoy Kumar Barua, inspector (Prosecution) of the Chattogram district police, said police sought five day's remand for Maidul Islam but the court granted three days' remand after hearing the petition filed on Sunday.

Police arrested Maidul following a case filed by Iftekharul Islam, a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) CU unit, under section 57 of the ICT Act with the Hathazari police station.
