CHITTAGONG, Dec 20: Chittagong University Teachers Association (CUTA) has expressed concern at the order of a local court sending a former assistant proctor of the university to jail in the case for the killing of CU student Diaz Irfan Chowdhury.

In a statement to the press, CUTA president Professor Dr Mihir Kumar Roy and general secretary Dr Moazzem Hossain said this afternoon that they were very much concerned as a teacher has been sent to jail as an accused in the murder case.

Associate professor of the Sociology Department of Chittagong University and former Assistant Proctor Anwar Hossain Chowdhury was made accused in the Diaz murder case.

As he surrendered before the court he was denied bail and sent to jail by the court.

The CUTA leaders said they have all respect for the law of the land but would expect that those who would be proved guilty in the court verdict after proper investigation would only be punished.

Protesting the move a section of the students led by leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League started an indefinite siege programme on the campus on Tuesday but it was withdrawn today following a meeting with the Vice Chancellor Professor Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor said he talked with the Home Minister and senior officials of the police department.

The police administration is still in the dark whether it was a murder or not or innocent persons are being accused and harassed, he said. CU student and BCL central committee member Diaz Irfan Chowdhury was found dead at his hired room on the CU Road number 2 on November 20 last year and his mother filed a case with the Hathazari Thana accusing 10 including CU teacher Anwar Hossain and BCL leader Alamgir Tipu.
