DB nabs Apu after Riyad in extortion case

Detective Branch (DB) police on Friday nabbed Jane Alam Apu, joint convener of BAGCHAS, in a case filed over demanding extortion from an ex-MP.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said that Apu was arrested from the capital's Wari area on Friday.
Apu of Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BAGCHAS) allegedly demanded Tk five million in extortion at the residence of a former member of parliament (MP) in the capital's Gulshan area.
Earlier, Gulshan police arrested several others in connection with the same extortion case, including Abdur Razzak bin Sulaiman alias Riyad, who is a former leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Ibrahim Hossain alias Munna, Sakadaun Siam and Sadman Sadab. They are now currently on remand.
Deputy Police Commissioner Rahman further said that the arrestees were interrogated over their attempt to extort Tk five million.
Meanwhile, based on their statements, four cheques worth a total of over Tk 22 million (Tk 2.25 crore) were recovered from a rented flat in Nakhla Para area in the capital belonging to Riyad.
Riyad was a member of the central committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
He has been permanently expelled from the organisation over his involvement in the extortion incident.
Moreover, Gulshan police raided Riyad's rented mess in Badda early Thursday and recovered Tk 0.298 million in cash.
