Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will celebrate its 48th founding anniversary today (Saturday), reports BSS.
On the eve of the day, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages greeting all members of DMP.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid said it is very important to maintain law and order and ensure the overall security of Dhaka city as the capital Dhaka is the centre of business, politics, economy and education-culture of the country.
Noting that stable law and order situation is one of the prerequisites for sustainable development, he said there is no alternative to a sustainable security system to continue the activities undertaken by the government to build a developed, prosperous and smart Bangladesh.
The head of the state said DMP, established with the aim of providing security in Dhaka city, is diligently fulfilling its responsibilities related to the security of Dhaka city, including prevention of terrorism, cyber crime, drug control, abuse of women and children and maintaining traffic management.
He urged DMP to become more people-friendly so that it could work as a friend of the people by ensuring social security and basic human rights.
PM Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said after assuming power in 2008, the Awami League-led government has taken effective steps to solve the complications of promotion of police officers by reforming the structure of almost all police units and creating new posts.
The police force is being comprehensively strengthened to achieve international standard capabilities in combating militancy, terrorism and cyber crime, she said.
As a result, the role of Bangladesh Police in dealing with the international, regional and local challenges of militancy and terrorism has been widely appreciated, the premier added.
Sheikh Hasina further said that the glorious success of the police in the United Nations peacekeeping mission has given Bangladesh a unique status in the global arena.
