Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan urged people on Friday to donate blood for saving lives, reports BSS.

"Everybody should donate blood to save lives. When a person donates blood, he is saving lives. So we should encourage people to come forward for such human cause," said Khan.

The home minister made the remarks while addressing a function organised by Quantum Foundation at the National Press Club in the city.

Quantum Foundation organised the function to honour people who donated blood 10, 25 and 50 times so far.

The home minister thanked quantum for encouraging the donors for such a noble cause.

"Quantum is working for making people healthy, with a clear conscience," he added.

Asaduzzaman Khan said even a young blood donor always tries his/her best to maintain distance from alcohol as his blood might get polluted and he would be rejected in blood screening.

"This is how, I think, Quantum is building a coordinated alcohol-free donor pool," said the minister.

Chief Coordinator of Voluntary blood donation activities of Quantum Foundation, Nahar Al Bukhari chaired the function while Prof Dr Nizamuddin Ahmed of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) presented the welcome speech.

A total of 134 silver donors were awarded for donating blood 10 times, 31 golden donors for 25 times and one donor, who donated blood for 50 times, were awarded at the ceremony.

"Around 30 to 35 per cent of the blood needed for different patients in our country comes from the voluntary donors, while 55 to 60 per cent comes from the relatives or friends," Prof Nizamuddin said.

Other speakers at the function said Quantum Foundation is a combined, self-planned and self-financed enterprise, which is serving the humanity.
