A total of 509 nomination papers were submitted for 28 positions in the long-awaited Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election out of the 658 distributed forms until Wednesday, the last day of nomination filing.

Moreover, a total of 689 candidates have submitted papers for the election in 12 hall unions thus far.

This information was shared on Wednesday by Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin during a briefing held at the Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building.

Nine panels, along with several independent candidates, are prepared to contest the DUCSU election, creating a vibrant and competitive campus atmosphere.

With the passing of time, preparations for the election are intensifying. The distribution of nomination papers had already been completed with 658 candidates having collected forms to take part in the polls.

The contesting panels include Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Islami Chhatra Shibir, Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS), Bangladesh Student Rights Council, the Leftist Students' Alliance, Aparajeyo 71-Adommo 24, Islami Chhatra Andolon, and two independent groups led by Umama Fatema and Jamal Uddin Khalid. Besides these, a considerable number of independents will also run for various positions.

JCD announced its final panel on Wednesday, the only party to submit both central and hall union panels.

From JCD, Abidul Islam Khan, joint general secretary of the DU unit, will run for vice president (VP), while Tanvir Bari Hamim, convener of Jasimuddin Hall JCD, will contest for general secretary (GS).

Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed, convener of Bijoy Ekattor Hall JCD, will vie for assistant general secretary (AGS).

The panel also includes candidates from minority communities, religious groups, and women.

In honor of Sanjida Islam Tonni, a student injured during the July uprising, JCD has left the Research and Publication Secretary post vacant.

Announcing the panel, JCD president Rakibul Islam Rakib said it was finalised through a democratic process without outside interference, with the goal of selecting popular and recognizable student leaders.

Islami Chhatra Shibir has nominated its central literature and publication secretary, as well as former DU unit president, Abu Sadiq Kayem, for VP post.

SM Forhad, the current DU unit president, will run for GS, while unit secretary Mohiuddin Khan will contest for AGS.

The panel includes candidates from minority groups, a visually impaired candidate, a student who lost vision during the July uprising, and four women.

However, Shibir will not field panels in hall unions, allowing its members to run independently.

Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS) has announced its "Anti-Discrimination Students' Council" panel.

Abdul Kader, convener of the DU unit, will contest for VP post, while central convener Abu Bakar Mojumdar and central spokesperson Ashrefa Khatun will run for GS and AGS, respectively.

Bangladesh Student Rights Council has entered the race with the slogan "DUCSU for Change, Vote for Change."

Its president, Bin Yamin Molla, will contest for VP post, with Sabina Yasmin and Rakibul Islam nominated for the GS and AGS positions.

The Democratic Students' Alliance, representing leftist groups, announced a full panel under the banner of "Protirodh Parishad" (Resistance Council).

Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Imi will run for VP, Meghmallar Basu for GS, Jabir Ahmed Jubel for AGS, and Mojammel Haque for Liberation War and Democratic Movement Secretary.

Outside this alliance, three leftist student organisations, Bangladesh Chhatra Union (Mahir-Bahauddin faction), Socialist Students' Front (BASAD), and Bangladesh Chhatra League (JSD) formed their own panel under the name "Aparajeyo 71-Adommo 24." Their panel includes Naim Hasan Hridoy for VP, Enamul Hasan Anoy for GS, and Aditi Islam for AGS.

From Islami Chhatra Andolon, Yasin Arafat, central executive member of the DU unit, will run for VP, while Khairul Ahsan Marzan, central assistant secretary, and Saif Mohammad Alauddin, DU unit secretary, will contest for GS and AGS.

An independent panel led by Umama Fatema includes her as VP candidate, former president of the Dhaka University Journalists' Association Al Sadi Bhuiyan for GS and its current president Mohiuddin Mujahid Mahi for AGS.

Another independent panel called "DU First," led by Jamal Uddin Khalid, president of the Independent Bangladesh Student Union, has nominated him for VP. Former NCP leader Mahin Sarker will contest for GS post, while Fateha Sharmin Anni will run for AGS.

Apart from these panels, many independent candidates will also contest for major positions, including vice president and general secretary.

The final list of candidates will be published after scrutiny, and the DUCSU and hall union elections are scheduled to be held on 9 September.
