DU female student found dead in Badda residence

A female student of Dhaka University has reportedly died by suicide, while police have taken a teacher and one of her close classmates into custody for questioning in connection with the incident.

The deceased, Munira Mahjabin Mimo, was a Master's student of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies of the 2019-20 academic session. She was living with her parents at a house in Badda of Dhaka.

Police recovered a chit from beside her body. According to officials, the note reads: "Sudip sir needs to be paid Tk50,000, Hani and Sudip sir, take care - returning the gifts sir gave."

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Gulshan Zone (Badda), Jewel, said that the body was recovered from the scene and sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

The body will be handed over to the family following the completion of the post-mortem examination. Based on preliminary evidence gathered during the investigation, police have taken a teacher from the department into custody for questioning.

Authorities said that if anyone's involvement is established, legal action will be taken accordingly. A close friend of the student has also been detained for interrogation in the same case.

Chairperson of the department, Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma, said that upon learning about the incident, faculty members visited the student's residence. Initial analysis of data from her mobile phone suggested possible link with a teacher, which led to police questioning him.
