Dhaka University (DU) is prepared to celebrate 'Pohela Boishakh' 1433, the first day of the Bangla New Year, with a series of vibrant and inclusive programmes tomorrow (Tuesday). This year's celebration theme is "Harmony of the New Year, Revival of Democracy".
The iconic procession, 'Boishakhi Shobhajatra', will begin at 9:00 am from in front of the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA). Preparations for the procession will start at 8:00 am. The procession will commence from FFA Gate No-3 (north), proceed towards Shahbag Police Station, where it will take a U-turn, and then pass by Raju Sculpture and the TSC. It will continue via Doel Chattar and in front of Bangla Academy before concluding at FFA.
Participants will be allowed to enter the campus only through Nilkhet and Palashi intersections. All other entry points and adjacent roads will remain closed during the procession.
To maintain discipline and aesthetic order, entry into the procession from surrounding points will not be permitted, and participants have been requested to join from the designated endpoint. For security reasons, all participants are advised to carry their identification cards.
DU has arranged a large-scale, diverse, and inclusive procession that reflects the country's rich folk heritage. This year's procession will feature five motifs - rooster, violin, dove, elephant, and horse -symbolizing strength, creativity, peace, pride, and dynamism. Adding to the festive atmosphere, a group of 35 musicians will perform the national anthem, 'Esho He Boishakh' song, and patriotic songs. Around 200 students will carry the national flag during the procession.
All new year programmes on the campus must conclude by 5:00 pm, and entry to the campus will be allowed only until that time. After 5:00 pm, no one will be permitted to enter, although exit will remain open. From 7:00 pm on April 13, only vehicles with university stickers will be allowed on the campus.
On 'Pohela Boishakh', all forms of vehicular movement, including motorcycles, will be strictly prohibited. Residents of the campus may use only the Nilkhet and Palashi gates for vehicle movement.
A cultural programme will be held at FFA on the eve of 13 April, marking the end of the outgoing year and the arrival of the new one. The event will take place at Bakultala from 4:00 pm, featuring folk music, dance, and various artistic performances.
Additionally, traditional 'jatra pala' performances will be staged on April 15 and 16.
