DUCSU airs concern over BNP's refusal to take oath in CRC

The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) expressed deep concern over the BNP-led alliance's decision not to take the oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council (CRC).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DUCSU leaders said by refraining from taking the oath, BNP had disregarded the direct mandate of people. It was contradictory to democratic practices and inconsistent with the commitments that the party had previously made under the July Charter.

According to the statement, the recent referendum resulted in a clear victory for the "Yes" vote, reflecting people's strong desire for constitutional reforms. Stepping away from the implementation process of the reforms meant ignoring their verdict.

The student body noted that it was the people's will that led to the resignation and departure of the previous regime. As a result, an interim government assumed office with three mandates - reform, justice, and election.

After extensive discussions, the July Charter was formulated, and the July Charter (Constitutional Reform) Order 2025 was issued to implement it. A referendum was subsequently held, where citizens voted in favour of the reforms. DUCSU emphasised that all these steps were taken in line with the will of people.

As per Clause 8 of the July Charter Implementation Order 2025, members of the Constitutional Reform Council were supposed to take their oath simultaneously. However, the BNP-led alliance did not participate in the oath-taking process.

DUCSU called on the BNP to respect people's mandate by taking the oath and participating in the July Charter implementation. It warned that failure to do so could create a new constitutional crisis.

"We urge all the parties not to rely on narrow constitutional interpretations, but to uphold the fundamental principle of respecting the people's will."
