The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) organised a special conference with elected representatives from 18 residential halls of the university.
The event was held on Wednesday night at the Nawab Nabab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building on the university campus.
The conference was chaired by DUCSU Vice-President (VP) Shadik Kayem and conducted by General Secretary (GS) SM Farhad. Special guests included Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof. Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Prof. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed.
Speaking at the event, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Niaz Ahmad Khan emphasized the university's significance in the nation's democratic journey. "Dhaka University plays a vital role in the democratic process of this country. Though we are an academic institution, we also represent a large segment of society. People across the country are emotionally connected with us. That is why we want to keep them informed about everything we do," he said.
He added, "We have come through a difficult period and now have the opportunity to move forward. For this, I express my gratitude to everyone involved."
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof. Mamun Ahmed praised the recent activities of DUCSU and the hall parliaments. "Over the past two months, DUCSU and hall leaders have accomplished some remarkable work despite various challenges and limitations. I thank them for their efforts. Yes, we have budget constraints, but we must continue working for our students. We are one family, and if we work together, Dhaka University and the country will move forward," he said.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Saima Haque Bidisha discussed the role of youth in the July uprising. "The young people made sacrifices in July hoping for a change. We expect to see that change through DUCSU. If the progress we have seen in the past two months continues, a major transformation is possible," she said.
In his presidential remarks, DUCSU VP Shadik Kayem said, "Today, we stand in a Dhaka University where there are no 'gonorooms' or 'guestrooms'. There is no tender manipulation or misuse of resources. For this, we want to thank the university administration."
He added, "We are not leaders; we are elected representatives of the students. We aim to dismantle the authoritarian structure that has grown within the university. A group of so-called progressive teachers are creating legitimacy for Hasina. Those who support murderers have no moral right to teach." He further said, "The July movement gave us freedom, and it is our responsibility to protect the spirit of July."
