The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) held its first executive meeting at the Vice Chancellor's (VC) office on Sunday. Five student representatives from DUCSU for the university senate were finalised in the meeting.
With holding the meeting, DUCSU officially began its activities. The session was chaired by DU VC Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan. Newly-elected DUCSU Vice-President (VP) Abu Shadik Kayem, General Secretary (GS) S M Forhad, AGS Md. Mohiuddin Khan, and 27 other elected members attended the meeting. Literature and Cultural Affairs Secretary Musaddiq Ali Ibn Mohammad was absent.
After the meeting, S M Forhad briefed the media. He said the participants introduced themselves, and speeches were delivered by the VP, the acting treasurer, and the VC (also the DUCSU president). Discussions centered on selecting five senate representatives and a treasurer for DUCSU, with official announcements to follow through a gazette.
The GS said, "Whatever our personal or political views are, we want to leave them aside, and stand as the voice of students. We will soon prepare a detailed action plan, specifying weekly tasks for the coming year."
He confirmed that the meeting reached a consensus on the senate nominees. The five student representatives are - VP Abu Shadik Kayem, GS S M Forhad, AGS Md. Mohiuddin Khan, Transport Secretary Asif Abdullah, and Member Sabikun Nahar Tamanna.
Explaining their selection, S M Forhad said the representatives (from DUCSU to Senate) traditionally include the VP, GS, and AGS. Along with them, the transport secretary was chosen to represent the non-residential students, and Tamanna was selected to ensure that the female students' issues are heard.
Abu Shadik Kayem said, "The students' job is to question us, and our responsibility is to fulfill the promises we have made. Every problem of the 40,000 students - academic, personal, or family-related - is ours to address."
"The elected representatives had already started reaching out to the students to listen to their concerns. Through this election, everyone has won. The July generation has triumphed, and so have the dreams of our martyrs," he remarked.
