Eco-based programmes ongoing for climate adaptation: Minister

The government is implementing a number of ecosystem-based programmes for effective adaptation approaches to climate change impacts in Barind and Haor regions of the country.

Under such a programme, re-excavation of canals and ponds and afforestation are going on in Hakaluki Haor area of Sylhet division.

In the Barind tracts of Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, ponds and canals are being re-excavated and afforestation being done for rainwater harvesting under a similar programme.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin on Friday said, "Training is being provided to enhance the capacity of government officials and local people on ecosystem-based adaptation approaches."

He shared the development with the media while delivering speech of the chief guest at the inauguration of re-excavation of Madhabchhara Canal, three water bodies and 18 ponds in Sujanagar under Baralekha Upazila of Moulvibazar.

The development work has been initiated under the Ecosystem Based Appro-aches to Adaptation in the Drought Prone Barind Tract and Haor Wetland Area (EBA) project.

The Department of Environment is implementing the scheme.

As part of the adaptation programmes, environment and eco-friendly alternative employment arrangements including medicinal plant cultivation, fish farming, and various types of fruit cultivation will be taken up for the local households.

The minister said the effects of climate change will be dealt with by involving people from all walks of life.

Baralekha Upazila Parishad Chairman Shoeb Ahmad, Baralekha Municipality Mayor Abul Imam Md Kamran Chowdhury, Moulvibazar district Water Development Board Executive Engineer Akhtaruzzaman and EBA Project Director AKM Rafiqul Islam were present as special guests at the event.
