WEEKLY KITCHEN MARKET

Edible oil, onion prices surge; veggie prices drop

FE REPORT | December 06, 2025 00:00:00

The edible oil market has witnessed a sudden price surge, while onion prices have also increased despite adequate supply.

In contrast, the prices of most winter vegetables have fallen in a week.

Retailers said refiners have raised edible oil prices without following government directives, resulting in an increase of Tk6-9 per litre across different brands.

Traders alleged that a syndicate is manipulating the market.

Similarly, onion prices rose by Tk 20-30 per kilogram within a week, although supply remains stable in most city markets. Now, onions are being sold at a price of Tk120 to 140 per kilogram.

However, new onions have started arriving in the market. Although the quantity is very small, one kilogram of onion with leaves is being sold for Tk70- 80.

Consumers also reported no significant issues with vegetable prices, which have begun to fall steadily as winter vegetables arrived in large quantities.

Kitchen markets are now well-stocked with seasonal produce, including beans, brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage, turnip, tomato, carrot, pumpkin, spinach, bottle gourd and radish. As supply improves, consumers expressed satisfaction with the gradual price decline.

Shimul, a shopper at the Mirbagh kitchen market, said prices of most winter vegetables have dropped this week, though prices of the items like tomato and new potato are still higher than expected.

Abu Bakar, a vegetable vendor at the same market, said prices of nearly all vegetables fell by Tk10-20 per kg due to increased supply.

Tomato prices have come down significantly-from Tk 120-140 per kg last week to Tk 80-100, depending on quality and market.

Similarly, medium-sized cauliflower and cabbage, previously sold for Tk 50-60 each, are now retailing at Tk 30-40. Quality brinjal is going for Tk 70-80 per kg, while round brinjal is priced at Tk 50-70, marking a decrease of Tk10-30 per kg in a week.

Price of yard-long bean fell to Tk 50-60 per kg from Tk 80-90 last week.

Prices of new potato, which typically starts adjusting at the beginning of the season, have dropped sharply-from Tk 140-160 per kg to Tk 70-90.

Pumpkin prices, however, have remained steady at Tk 50-55 per kg.

Another vendor, Abdul Halim, echoed that prices of most winter vegetables-especially new potatoes, tomatoes, beans, cabbage and cauliflower-declined by Tk 10-30 per kg over the week.

Meanwhile, the egg and chicken market has remained stable. Farm eggs are selling at Tk 115-125 per dozen, while broiler chicken prices are unchanged at Tk150-170 per kg.
