Eggs were hurled at theatre activists rallying outside Dhaka's Shilpakala Academy on Friday, as they protested against the recent suspension of the play 'Nityapuran'.
Organised by the Bangladesh Group Theater Federation, the rally denounced the recent interruption of the performance following demands from a vocal opposition group.
Following the attack, the Federation has announced a nationwide protest for November 15. Federation Acting Chairman Lucky Enam, General Secretary Kamal Bayezid, Desh Natok playwright Masum Reza, and Prof Malay Bhowmik were among the speakers at the event.
On November 2, the group outside the Shilpakala Academy demanded that Desh Natok's Nityapuran be stopped mid-performance, alleging that a member of the theatre group was circulating humiliating posts on social media against the student uprising that ousted Awami League from power and forced the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India.
Citing safety concerns, the Shilpakala Academy authorities halted the play. In response, the Bangladesh Group Theater Federation arranged the Friday's rally to express their discontent.
