Eviction drive starts along Karnaphuli

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 04: Demolition of illegal structures started along the banks of the Karnaphuli River on Monday.

The eviction drive led by Tahmilur Rahman, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Patenga Circle, started at 10:15 am from Sadarghat in the city.

During the drive, illegal structures were pulled down by bulldozer, pay-loader, excavator, truck and other equipment.

After snapping of illegal electricity lines by line operators of Power Development Board, the authority started the demolition work with support from the members of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Rapid Action Battalion and workers of the Chittagong City Corporation and Chittagong Development Authority.

As many as 150 members of the CMP took part in the eviction drive launched by the district administration.

Magistrate Tahmilur Rahman said the drive will continue until they pull down all illegal structures. The drive is being carried in three groups - Port area to Majhirghat, Majhirghat to Karnaphuli Shah Amanat Bridge and Karnaphuli Bridge to Mohra in Kalurghat area.

He said the decision to conduct the eviction drive has been taken following a High Court order on August 16, 2016 upon a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh. The petition was moved by Advocate Manjil Morshed on behalf of the petitioner.
