Ex-UZ chairman sued over land grabbing

FE REPORT | October 12, 2024 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has lodged a lawsuit against a former upazila chairman and another individual for grabbing land through forging documents.

The accused are Md Aminul Islam (66), former upazila chairman of Birganj, Dinajpur, and his brother Md Azaharul Islam (59).

They have been charged with conspiring to illegally seize 1.55 acres of land belonging to the indigenous community in Makrai area of the upazila.

Kamrunnahar Sarkar, ACC deputy director, Integrated District Office, Dinajpur, filed the case on Wednesday.

Md Ismail Hossain, assistant director of the same office, is investigating the case.

The land originally belonged to Suresh, a member of the Santal indigenous community. After his father's death, the land was inherited by his son, Suresh.

Despite a court ruling in favour of Suresh as the rightful owner, former chairman Aminul and his brother Azahar refused to vacate the property and continued to occupy it illegally.

Furthermore, Azahar allegedly accepted money from various individuals, issuing fraudulent agreements and allowing them to build houses on the land.

An ACC investigation revealed that the accused used forged documents to claim ownership of the land and sold portions of it to different buyers.

These acts were in violation of court orders and Penal Code 1860 sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 109 as well as the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947, section 5(2).

Based on the findings, the ACC recommended legal proceedings against both individuals for their abuse of power, forgery and land grabbing.
