Financial penalty, if extra fares realised

BRTA chair warns bus operators

FE REPORT | August 13, 2022 00:00:00

Bus operators will face financial penalty if they realise extra fares from passengers by flouting the revised fare charts, said Chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Nur Mohammad Mazumder.

"BRTA has taken appropriate measures to check extra fares allegedly being realised by a section of bus operators on different city bus routes. We are continuously imposing fines to the buses failing to show new bus fare charts. Our drive will continue," he told the media after visiting Mohakhali Bus Terminal in the capital on Friday.

Earlier, the government revised the bus fares following the recent hike in fuel prices.

The BRTA has provided revised fare charts based on the distance to the bus owners in the capital and outside the capital (inter-district bus operators).

But most of the bus operators, especially the ones in the capital, do not show the revised fare charts and are allegedly realising extra fares from the passengers.

Asked why the fares were increased even in some Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-run buses, the BRTA chairman said they would again give a directive to bus operators, asking them to paste stickers on their buses to clarify whether they are run by diesel or CNG.

Earlier, during November last, the government revised CNG prices.

The CNG-run buses that time revised bus fares in line with the BRTA directive.
