The government has decided to allow import of onions from different countries to increase its supply and ease market price across the country.
Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin announced the decision at a press briefing - following a meeting to set the 2025-26 fiscal year export targets at the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday.
The adviser said onion would be imported based on supply and demand. Permits would be granted to import onion not only from India, but from wherever the traders concerned want to import.
"Our main objective is to increase onion supply and reduce its prices. For this, onion will be imported from the countries where its prices are lower."
Onion is now being sold at Tk 70-85 per kg in the city markets, which was around Tk 60 per kg last week.
Due to soaring prices of the essential, the government has decided to allow its import. However, the import date and quantity have not been announced yet.
