Govt firm to stamp out corruption: Law minister

September 29, 2019 00:00:00

Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said the government is determined to establish good governance in the country by eliminating corruption from society, reports UNB.

"The country's economic development is being hampered due to corruption … corruption is also contradictory to the country's Constitution, Liberation War spirit and the ideals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," he said.

The law minister was addressing a function arranged at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city to provide stipends among some 2,000 higher secondary poor but meritorious students.

Dutch-Bangla Bank, a private sector bank of the country, is providing the stipends.

"Now, corruption has become the main problem of our society … we need to work together to stamp out this menace from our society," Anisul Huq insisted.

He said the more developed and educated a nation is, the lower their corruption tendency is. "But in Bangladesh, social crimes are not declining although the development and rate of education increased," he said.

"The most concerning matter is that these crimes are mostly being committed by the educated people. The time has come to think about this issue. Our families, society, and educational institutions have to take measures in this regard," he said.

Minister Huq also called on the students to resist drugs and unethical activities. "The government will provide all assistance and take necessary measures," he added.

He said the government's main goal is to make the country developed by 2041. "It's our moral duty to take measures for the proper growth of the students' merits as they're the future leaders of the country," the minister said.
