June 25, 2018 00:00:00

Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Monju said on Sunday the government has taken an initiative to make the Buriganga river pollution free through increasing its water flow, reports BSS.

The minister made the comments while replying to a query placed by treasury bench lawmaker Didarul Alam of Chattogram-4 constituency at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS).

To this end, Bangladesh Water Development Board is implementing a project titled "Buriganga River recovery (New Dalweshwari-Pungli,-Bongshai-Turag- Buriganga river system) project" at a cost of Tk 11.25 billion.

Under the project, the water development board will increase 141 cusec water flow of the Buriganga river by bringing 245 cusec water flow from the Jamuna during the dry season, the minister mentioned.

Consequently, the water flow and navigability of the Buriganga will increase during the dry season and the intensity of pollution will also be decreased, he added.

Currently, the project is now going on and implementation of the project will end by June 2020, the minister noted.
