Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said on Sunday the government will amend the existing laws to increase the level of punishment for food adulteration.

"The government will amend the existing laws, if necessary, to increase the level of punishment for food adulteration," he said after launching a 'mobile truck road show' campaign.

The campaign was launched to create awareness among city dwellers about safe food during the holy month of Ramadan.

The minister said the drive against food adulteration will continue all the year round, considering the interests of consumers.

"We will continue our drive against food adulteration, not only in Ramadan but all the year round," he added.

For the month of Ramadan, the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) has deployed four mobile trucks decorated with different banners inscribed with slogans about health and safe food.

"Those who are involved with food adulteration are the enemy of humanity. We hope that from now the people will get safe food," the food minister said.

The government will increase the number of mobile courts, if necessary.

He also stressed the need for creating awareness among the consumers about safe food.

BFSA Chairman Mohammad Mahfuzul Hoque said they are working to create awareness among the consumers about safe food.

The mobile trucks will continue with the campaign in different places of Dhaka city until May 28 aiming to create awareness among the consumers, he added.

Leaflets on safe food were distributed among the people at Sadarghat, Badamtali, Jagannath University, Nilkhet, Newmarket, Science Lab, Sayedabad, Jatrabri, North Jatrabari, Abdullahpur, Tongi and Azampur Bridge areas.
