Govt to raise financial contributions to UN by 25 per cent

January 03, 2017 00:00:00

FE Report

The government is set to raise its financial contributions to the United Nations by 25 per cent following frequent requests from the global body, officials said.

The ministry of finance and the ministry of foreign affairs have given consent to this issue, they added.

Bangladesh has already graduated from low income country to lower middle income country. The country is forwarding to achieve a middle income status by 2021. It has achieved self-sufficiency in food, an official of the finance ministry said.

He, however, said foreign currency reserve, per capita income and gross domestic product (GDP) have increased manifold. Under these circumstances, the government has decided to increase the state contribution fees, he added.

The proposal has been placed to the committee concerned for approval.

Different bodies of the UN had long been making request to increase the country's subscriptions fees. In this regard, the country also thinks that contribution fees should be reasonable considering the country's overall situation. The fees had been fixed almost one decade ago.

"We are ready to provide increased fees as a member state. We are sincerely working on this issue,' a senior official of Economic Relations Division (ERD) told the FE.

Usually, the United Nations pledging conference for development activities is held in November every year.

Contribution fees would increase by around US$ 0.4 million than the existing figure, according to the finance ministry.

The government has to pay as subscription fees to ten bodies of the UN including its regional and head offices.

In September 1974, the south-central Asian country became the 136th member. The country has been paying different fees since then.
