Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Saturday Bangladesh's graduating to a developing state from the category of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) is a great achievement on the birthday of Bangabandhu, reports BSS.

"The United Nations recognition to Bangladesh as a developing country is a great achievement on the birthday of Bangabandhu," he told newsmen after paying homage to Bangabandhu by placing a wreath at his portrait at Dhanmondi road number-32 here on his 99th birthday.

Quader, also minister for road transport and bridges, said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of independent Bangladesh, had two dreams- to turn Bangladesh into a developing country and to achieve the economic emancipation of the people.

The first dream of Bangabandhu, who was assassinated in 1975 four years after the country's independence, has been materialised under the leadership of his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added.

The minister said the government-led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also been working relentlessly to materialise the second dream of Bangabandhu to achieve the economic freedom of the people.

The ruling party's general secretary sought cooperation of all to turn the country into a Sonar Bangla as dreamt of Bangabandhu.

Quader also congratulated Bangladesh national cricket team on winning the crucial match against Sri Lanka in the Nidahas tri-nation trophy to take the team into the final against India.
