The High Court (HC) summoned on Monday a physician and a nurse of Lohagarah Upazila Health Complex in Chattogram to explain the death of a newborn soon after his birth on the hospital premises as his mother was driven away, reports UNB.

Following a writ petition, an HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Shahidul Karim asked Dr Abdullah Al Mamun and senior nurse Chaya Chowdhury to appear before the court on July 1 to explain their stance.

The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why the failure of the hospital to provide treatment to Mariam Begum, mother of the newborn, should not be declared illegal.

It also wanted to know why the physician and nurse concerned should not be asked to provide compensation to the deceased family and why the failure of the hospital authorities to save the life of the newborn should not be declared illegal.

Health and Family Welfare secretary, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, President and Secretary of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council, Civil Surgeon of Chattogram and four others have been made respondents to the rule which is returnable in four weeks.

Advocate Manzill Murshid stood for the petitioner.

Earlier, on Sunday, Advocate Manzil lMurshid on behalf of the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed the writ petition with the HC.

On May 9, Mariam Begum, wife of day-labourer Maharram Miah, was taken to the Lohagarah Health Complex after she went into labour. However, Chaya Chowdhury drove her away from the hospital.

Shortly afterwards, Mariam gave birth to a baby boy on the hospital premises. However, the newborn died soon after his birth.
