Holistic approach needed to curb graft: ACC Chief

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah on Friday urged the public to identify the corrupt in a bid to curb the spread of corruption.

However, he acknowledged that it is not possible to reduce corruption overnight by enforcing law only.

Holistic consciousness and social consent is also required in this regard, commented Mr Abdullah.

He said this during a human chain formed in front of the ACC headquarters in the capital's Segunbagicha area, marking International Anti-Corruption Day, which is observed worldwide.

Terming corruption a global problem, the ACC chief said everyone should take an oath that they would not commit corruption themselves and not let others do that heinous act either.

"Once Bangladesh ranked one of the most corrupt countries in the world, but with systematic efforts, things have changed, and we can hope that graft will steadily disappear," he cited.

Mr Abdullah further said that the money generated through graft is the origin of new types of crime that create barriers to the building of a beautiful and prosperous country.

The 20th edition of the global day was observed in all eight divisions, 64 districts and different upazilas.

ACC commissioner (enquiry) Md Mozammel Haque Khan, commissioner (investigation) Jahurul Haque and secretary Md Mahbub Hossain, among others, were also present at the programme.
